Meet our Tutors

Shelley Monrad

Principal and founder of Aromaflex and Aromaflex Academy.   With almost 25 years qualified in Aromatherapy and Reflexology; SP Dip Aromatherapy, AMA Dip Reflexology MIFPA (UK), MAOC, ITEC (UK); MNZROHA, MNZIR.  Has a Diploma in Tertiary Teaching since 2001. Quite a few Post Graduate certificates in various modalities relative to Natural Health and professional disciplines.  Proud to serve 20 years clinical experience in Aromatherapy and Reflexology and continue to work in a dedicated treatment room, based on the ground floor of Development House.  A Proud mother of 4 children, 1 still in Nelson Boys College, 1 in Canterbury University and 2 working in Pharmacy and Farming.  Chairperson of the NZ Register of Holistic Aromatherapists in NZ for the last 7 years.

Bev Fockenga

Bev is a qualified obstetric nurse, Aromatherapist and Sports Massage practitioner. Bev teaches the Anatomy & Physiology & Pathology course in Nelson for the last 7 years, and moderates our students progress in this subject.  Bev is a massage therapist at home and does workplace massage in corporate environments.  Bev also works with the elderly in a retirement village as an relieving area co-ordinator.  She is an advent tramper, and walker, does Thai Chi and happily married with 2 young adult children.  Surrounded by many friends and family in the North and overseas in Germany which require regular yearly visits.

Christine Burn

Tutor. Aromaflex Diploma in Aromatherapy. MNZROHA, National Certificate in Adult Teaching. Responsible for Aromatherapy & Aromascience student assignments and teaching various Aromatherapy classes. Christine is a keen tramper and loves her garden.  Christine has been part of Aromaflex Academy for over 12 years and is dedicated to her students and their progress.  Has an amazing knowledge of essential oils and blending, including perfumery.

Ashley Ashton

BSc, Dip. Tchg. I am 33 years old, married to Bethany and we have 7 children..  I am a registered secondary school teacher in New Zealand and have taught Science, Biology and Chemistry.  I am currently employed in the Electrical industry here in Nelson.  I love the outdoors and have a wide range of interests.  I have a keen  and active interest in health issues and I believe society has much to gain and learn from the alternative therapies.

Helen Drummond

Student Liaison - Reflexology.  I hold a Diploma in teaching at primary level. Also diplomas in Clinical Herbal Medicine and Reflexology.  After 30 years in the education system it was time to change direction this drew me to herbal medicine first then reflexology. I now run my herbal / reflexology practice from my home in Richmond calling myself Herbflex.  I am happily married with four children one still at secondary school, one at university the other two in the work force. Life is full.  I look forward to including my new role with Aromaflex Academy with Herbflex.

Tina Shirley

Academy Administrator - My previous role was in health as a Database Administrator - this included training,help-desk, developing templates and producing materials, etc.  I worked with many different databases.  I also worked/trained everyone from clerical to doctors.  I was at the Nelson Marlborough Health Board for 15 years. I have a certificate in Adult Teaching.  Prior to that I was living on Taiwan teaching English as a Second Language - I was here for 7 years.  Between that time I did a lot of travelling mainly though South East Asia for 5 years.  I have 2 beautiful children (young adults), Jake is 18 and has left school and is working, Emma is 16 and in her last year at College, next year she is going to Telford to study Equine.

Karen Middleton

Karen gained her Aromaflex Academy and ITEC Diplomas in Reflexology and Anatomy and Physiology in Nelson in 2012.  With a wealth of teaching experienced gained over a 25 year career in primary and secondary school education in Africa and a passion for Reflexology, the step to teaching this Introductory Reflexology Course was a natural progression.  Karen runs her own busy reflexology clinic where it is her passion and purpose to support her clients to wellness and wholeness.  Karen lives in Auckland, is married with two teenage sons. www.karensreflexology.co.nz
